Ear microsuction in Westcliff and Southend: what to expect at your appointment

Kalsons Chemist · Published

Blocked ears can make conversations harder to follow and everyday sounds seem muffled. Earwax can be one cause, but a change in hearing should not automatically be put down to wax.

At Kalsons Chemist in Westcliff-on-Sea, our ear-care appointments start with an assessment. Microsuction may be offered when wax removal is appropriate. This guide explains the process and what to consider before booking.

Does all earwax need removing?

No. Earwax protects the ear, and it usually makes its way out naturally. A build-up can sometimes cause a blocked feeling, earache, reduced hearing or ringing in the ears. An assessment helps establish whether wax is present and whether it needs treating.

What is microsuction?

Microsuction uses a small suction tube to remove wax while the clinician looks into your ear using magnification. Unlike ear irrigation, sometimes called ear syringing, it does not flush the ear with water. These are different methods; suitability depends on your ears and medical history.

How should I prepare?

Follow the instructions supplied for your appointment. Softening wax beforehand may be advised, but the product and timing should be agreed with the team. Tell them about previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, recent ear infections or discharge before using ear products.

Do not use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum. Avoid cotton buds and other objects inside the ear: these can push wax further in.

Let the clinician know about medicines you take, particularly blood-thinning medicines, because the ear canal can occasionally bleed during treatment.

What happens during the appointment?

At Kalsons, the assessment comes first. The team will discuss your concerns and decide whether wax removal is suitable. Booking an appointment does not guarantee that microsuction will be appropriate.

During microsuction, the clinician works under direct vision with a small suction probe. Keep your head still and tell them if you need to cough, feel dizzy or want a break; the procedure can be stopped. Some people need a further appointment.

Will it hurt, and are there risks?

Many people find microsuction comfortable, but the sound can feel loud and hard wax can make removal uncomfortable. Possible effects include dizziness, irritation or a small graze with bleeding. Infection, tinnitus or changes in hearing can occur rarely. Discuss any concerns with the clinician before treatment and speak up if you feel uncomfortable.

What happens afterwards?

Follow the aftercare advice given and avoid putting objects into your ear canal. If you develop problems after treatment, seek clinical advice. If your hearing has not returned after wax treatment, arrange a GP assessment; wax may not be the only cause. Sudden hearing loss needs urgent help as described above.
