Why prompt advice matters
Emergency contraceptive pills need to be taken within three or five days after sex, depending on the type. They are more likely to work the sooner they are taken. Seek advice as soon as you can, even if you are unsure which option you need.
What the pharmacist will ask
The pharmacist will discuss when sex took place, any contraception used, your health and medicines. These details help them assess which option may be appropriate. Tell them about any further unprotected sex and any emergency contraception already taken so the advice reflects your circumstances.
Pills and other options
Oral emergency contraception can be supplied where suitable following assessment. A copper intrauterine device (IUD) is another emergency contraception option and is the most effective method. If this or another service is appropriate, the pharmacist can explain where to seek further help; IUD fitting is not offered through this pharmacy consultation.
Follow-up advice
The pharmacist can discuss ongoing contraception, when to take a pregnancy test and whether sexual health advice or testing may be needed. Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Use the booking link only if an appointment is available within the time you need help.
